We are in week 4 in our session Mastering Positive Change in our health, our selves, and our relationships!
Today is all about the drugs used to get more sleep and to decrease the stress in our lives. Stress is when we have struggle in our lives that we feel we can’t control.
According to the American Psychological Association, the reasons that men and women stress differ. Women tend to feel stress from work, family, and health. The main cause of stress for Men were from work. How the sexes manage stress differ…women tend to spend time with their family or read, and men mostly relive stress from physical activity.
To all my ladies reading this, the natural caretakers we are, sometimes can hurt us physically.
When you don’t get enough sleep, your heart rate and blood pressure don’t get to that resting state that is necessary for rejuvenation.
The National Sleep Foundation performed a study, and found that getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night increased the likelihood of stroke and heart attack compared with individuals who slept 6-8 hours a night.
Lack of sleep is associated with obesity. When you are sleep deprived, this increases the stress hormone cortisol, which increases your appetite.
There are drugs that cause you to stay awake such as stimulants such as amphetamines and pseudoephedrine and caffeine.
1. Diphenhydramine – Simply sleep, Zzzquil and Benadryl.
The dose is usually 25mg to 50mg before going to bed.
It takes about 30-1 hour for it to kick in, so you should already be at home. Do not drive or operate any heavy machinery after taking this medication, because this medication will make you very drowsy.
This med increases fall risk, especially in the elderly population.
Men with prostate issues or people with glaucoma should not take this medication.
It is also used to treat allergy symptoms like hives, itchy eyes, scratchy throat, and runny nose.
2. Melatonin – OTC dietary supplement.
Mimics body’s natural hormone melatonin
Doses available between 1mg to 10mg.
It can take up to 4 hours for melatonin to work, and can be used during the day for special circumstances, like flying.
Side effects are dizziness and headache.
Melatonin should not be used in people with an autoimmune disease, like Lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
I talk about the drugs more in depth for stress in my course Mastering Positive Change. Especially the benzodiazepines. Like valium and Xanax.
There is increased controversy about these medications, because mixed with opioids and alcohol increases the chance of respiratory depression.
If you have an issue with opioid addiction or substance abuse, make sure you talk to your doctor or see a counselor, or call the substance abuse line. I posted that information on my website if you need more information. Also, you can schedule and RxPowerHour with me, service covered through Medicare and Medicaid.
Until tomorrow, self-love yourself, what is more important than you?!
